Thanks Dad!

I know my Dad is unlikely ever to see this. Well, he might, but this is a thank you to all the Mom's and Dad's out there that ever taught their kids gun safety as a regular part of being a person, like riding bikes and tying shoes.

Yesterday, 4 firearms were given to me to store in my gun safe for a while. I figured it made sense to store them for a bit since it's better to have a crowded safe than an unsafe house somewhere else right? So as they're being unpacked and handed to me I do what I always do. What I can't not do...I check the chambers. Upon seeing me do this to the first one the delivery person (a mutual friend) says "Oh, [she] said they were unloaded." I replied, that I always check anyhow. Well on gun #4 a pistol I check and sure enough I found it loaded. With a full magazine, a round in the chamber and the safety OFF. It should have NEVER been driven across town that way. Nobody was hurt, nothing bad happened. But, for the first time in my life my rote checking of chambers paid off. I hope it's the last, but I doubt it will be.

So thanks Dad, for teaching me gun safety. An extra thanks for teaching me to open the bolts on every style of firearm I'm likely to run into, not just the ones in the house or the ones that were mine.
